Flagstaff officials and the water committee weigh all avenues for new supply. Atmospherics Inc. president Thomas Henderson argues cloud seeding can augment snowpack and reservoir inflows, though not guarantee 10 percent increases. Lake Mary relies on winter snow for most water.
The university yesterday accepted a new academic center costing 10.7 million dollars, consisting of eight buildings. Lawrence Walkup announced Dr. E. Russel Kuchel as Provost to lead the campus, joining Norman Sharber and Virgil W. Gillenwater in planning. The facility will house about 600 students this year, expanding from a 174 student pilot, and will eventual accommodate around 4,000 students.
Governor Williams defended welfare programs before about 150 at the County GOP Barbecue in Mormon Lake saying Arizona finances are solvent and benefits will rise slowly as revenue allows. He praised the correctional system, new girls home, and cloud seeding success while noting limited funds.
Governor Jack Williams told about 150 attendees that Arizona is moving forward while defending the Welfare Department amid criticism. He praised state corrections as a top national program. Also present was U.S. Rep. Sam Steiger backing Nixon wage and price policies. Senator Barry Goldwater and Tribal Chairman Peter McDonald could not attend.
Merrett Slick McAlister, 60, was shot dead while his wife Peart, 56, was wounded at their Tooner ville trading post about 26 miles east of Flagstaff. Roadblocks were set as deputies hunted a vague description of a black male duo in a blue car. Mrs. McAlister called her friend Joan Gray, who reported the scene and aided in an inquest while Marshall county officials conducted the investigation.
Flagstaff officials heard from Tom Henderson of Atmospheric Inc that the Flagstaff area has high potential for winter cloud seeding to boost Lake Mary water. Eric Walther noted summer seeding produced runoff to Lake Mary, while winter seeding could better capture snowfall and spring runoff. Henderson warned seeds could raise legal questions, but no current legal barriers exist. He described himself as a weather modification veteran since 1948 and cited past success with a private power company.
