Women Libers March for Equal Rights Across States
In 1971 Women’s liberation groups across the nation staged marches and demonstrations to press for the equal rights amendment and broad gender equality. NOW urged Congress to back the ERA and to seek political power, child care, abortion rights, education and employment equality, and legal equality. In New York eight women disrupted the American Stock Exchange, unfurling a white banner and prompting a brief stoppage before removal by escorts. Salt Lake City planned a whistle-and-protest tactic to mock sexism. A separate local accident near Flagstaff left Kathleen Borum uninjured after a high-speed hit-and-run on U.S. 180 north of the city. the offending vehicle remains unidentified, possibly purple, and the case is with the Highway Patrol.
