Lao authorities say communist rebels pose an expanding threat as the government refrains from asking outside help. The regime emphasizes rising danger while portraying restraint in seeking assistance from major powers.
Kenneth Siwitzer secretary of the Flagstaff Notary club is a candidate for Governor of Rotary district 549. Switzer, a former club president, is now secretary treasurer and has attended rotary international events. He previously served as Flagstaff city councilman and mayor and leads the Flagstaff Community Hospital board. He was born 1916 in Flagstaff and has a family. Other items report SEATO pact background and Laos observer talks with Dag Hammarskjold, noting no Security Council or General Assembly action requested.

Sedona hosts the 7th annual Coconino Sheriff’s Posse Roundup and Rodeo drawing riders and ropers from at least 12 of Arizona’s 16 posses. The weekend events begin with a Saturday dance at Sedona Lodge, a Sunday breakfast, a parade at 12:30, and a 1:20 rodeo at the Posse Grounds. Admission is 1 for adults, children under 12 free.
Clyde Mutheson of Flagstaff begins a 76.40 contract to build a Visitor Center and a three unit apartment at Montezuma Castle National Monument as part of the Mission 66 program. The center will house exhibits restrooms lobby and offices while the apartment will support seasonal park staff. Completion is set for February 1960 with later site parking expansion to handle more visitors. The work coincides with the National Park Service anniversary marking 43 years since its 1926 establishment.
AP dispatch reports a Kansas man, T1-year old Otte Standke, claiming to have driven starlings from a Mount Vernon district. Residents remain skeptical as Standke is described with noisy devices and a mysterious inner weapon, while birds reportedly relocate to other feeding grounds. Authorities offered a $4,000 reward for ousting starlings, but Standke provided little verifiable action beyond nightly noisemaker use.

Wupatki and Sunset Crater National Monuments marked the National Park Service centennial observing the agency created in 1916. Superintendent Russell L. Mehan noted growth to over 480 areas and visitors rising from 1 million in 1916 to well over 50 million, with Mission 66 aiming for 80 million annually by 1966.
