Mrs. Annie Hicks 61 died Tuesday night at Flagstaff Community Hospital. She is survived by nine children, all of state, and previously resided with her daughter Mrs. Burnelle Hammond of Fligstall. Funeral arrangements pending expected locally.
AEA Flagstaff session leaders blasted current tax assessment as a hodge podge and warned that many Arizona resources lie outside exploding school districts needing funds. They favor stricter state land laws for public schools and back two 1963 legislative proposals to require competitive bidding on oil and mineral leases and to withhold oil and mineral rights when selling state school lands.

A change in the Hopi armiial snake dances was noted as events began at Hotevilla yesterday. Two additional dances are planned: Shungo povi on Saturday and Shipaulavi on Sunday, both starting at 4 p.m. Each will last about an hour before the snakes are recased. The dances typically precede rain, and this weekend's events will be held on the Second Mesa, accessible from Flagstaff via paved all weather roads.
Heavy equipment roared around the Ft. Tuthill race track as crews worked to finish the straightaway extension. The new section would permit quarterhorse races up to 440 yards and grandstand side starts for most thoroughbred distances. State Racing Commission racing secretary Claude Berry released eight entries for Friday, short of nine authorized, hoping for more races Sunday and likely nine on Labor Day weekend.

At a Winslow council meeting a motion passed to advertise bids for drilling, supplying materials, and testing a fifth city water well funded by the $550,000 water bond. The council also authorized a bid for a portable air compressor for the water department and directed the attorney to draft a letter permitting tin can removal from the city dump.
