Pravda reported two space dogs Belka and Strelka showed alarm after liftoff but recovered quickly as the capsule completed 18 orbits in 24 hours and landed safely in a meadow. Farmers nearby greeted the animals while scientists monitored pulse and breathing.
A 17-year-old Grand Canyon Indian, Maynard Siyuja, was killed when his car left U.S. 66 and plunged 60 feet down an embankment 11 miles east of Seligman. Passenger Victory Waluhomogie, 17, was hospitalized with lacerations and abrasions. Patrolman Randy Wakefield said Siyuja appeared to fall asleep at the wheel. the crash occurred around 2 am and was found about 6 am.
City council opens its second regular meeting of the month at City Hall. Old business includes a public hearing on zoning ordinance changes allowing the board of adjustment to grant exemptions for pre existing conditions. NewBusiness covers a boat transfer request, water and sewer taps for campus buildings, sprinkler charges, a four way stop for Third Street and Second Avenue, a Trane zone for Alpine Motel, and an improvement district for Pinveres No 2 subdivision. A late shower spread to a downpour by night, wetting the Hopis’ Snake Dance at Hotevilla. forecaster Sorenson credited Hurricane Diane’s moisture but cautioned the storm’s duration remains uncertain, predicting rain for a couple of days.
John Addison and 22 co defendants face trial in Cameron County Superior Court before Judge Lee Garrett on charges of detaining a former employee at Murchison Ventures in the Cameron area uranium chamber site for seven hours last June 4. Deputy County Attorney Robert Warden moved to drop Leland Wagonery from the case as a state witness.
The Congo government withdrew its demands on the United Nations Congo operation and, after a tense meeting with Lumumba and the Soviet ambassador, signaled willingness to have Belgian troops withdrawn. The move follows intently debated Security Council discussions amid Lumumba’s threats to seek aid from the Soviet Union.
Eight trailer tenants in Page Trailer Court, managed by Page Service under MCS lease, were ordered to vacate by September 1. Only two have alternative work within MCS, while others fear loss of income. County Attorney Aimee Wrengrid notes no lay exists yet. Nearest trailer park is 14 miles away in Clon Canyon City, where resources are scarce.
