New Regional Director Named by National Park Service

Fred A. Seite announces Thomas A. Allen will succeed Hugh Miller as regional director of Region Three with headquarters in Santa Fe. Allen, veteran park service officer and former superintendent of Mount Rainier and Zion Bryce Canyon parks, brings prominent career in park management and 21 months in the U.S. Air Corps. Miller, nearing 65, retires after decades directing Region Three covering Oklahoma to parts of Nevada and overseeing major parks and monuments.

Secona Man Enlisted in U S Navy in Phoenix

Henry Gilbert of Sedona was enlisted in the United States Navy this past week in Phoenix. He now undergoes recruit training at Naval Training Center in San Diego after high marks on exams and earning his high school diploma. He attended Mingus High School in Clarkdale and was named Seaman Recruit under the Navy High School Flight program.

Funeral Monday for Cleo Kirkendall former Flag resident

Funeral services are set for Monday at 2 pm at Penlyess Morntuary Chapel in Fort Smith Arkansas for Cleo Red Kirkendall 52 a World War II veteran and former Flagstaff resident who died at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Payelleville Arkansas. He was active in the Church of Christ and a member of Mark A Moore Post No 3 American Legion. Survivors include three brothers and four sisters with relatives in Portimid Ora Fort Smith and San Pedro California among others.

42 Scholarship Students Attending Journalism Workshop at ASC Winslow Unit

Forty two students from Washington High and other campuses attend the first Arizona digh school journalism workshop at Arizona State College in Tempe. Scholarships totaling 1185 dollars support two thirds of the 68 participants. Scholarships come from varied clubs and organizations, aiding beginners in fundamentals of journalism, yearbook, and photography, with sessions run morning and afternoon through August 16 to 27.

The Associated Press reports Americans from the Rockies to the Atlantic faced oppressive heat and humidity with a cooling front expected to bring relief. Funeral Rites Set Monday for Flag Girl 18

Funeral services will be held Monday at p.m. at Mt Calvary Lutheran Church for Linda Frances Benson, 14, of Flagstaff, who died Friday afternoon after an illness. She was a Flagstaff High School graduate, former Girls League president, and junior varsity cheerleader. Surviving parents, grandparents, and several aunts are named. Joseph City Youth Re-Enlists in Korea

Specialist Floyd Mechan of Joseph City re-enlists in Korea for four years in the Angular Army while serving with the 1st Cavalry Division. He enters the Army in May 1958 and reaches the Far East in December 1958. A 1955 Thatcher High School graduate, he attended New Mexico A and M College and is a Tau Kappa Epsilon member.

In San Francisco Peter Gluckman a 34 year old German born American pilot started a solo around the world in a single engine aircraft. He departed nonstop for Mexico City to chase a world record with backing from the Federation Aeronautique Internationale noting this would be the first official globe circling night under federation rules.

Richard D. Barnes 42 of Chandler Aviz was killed when his car skidded out of control and hit a guard rail at the intersection of two highways near Bloomfield New Mexico. He died of internal injuries according to state police.
