Traffic toll climbs to 312 in Arizona on 1961 roads
The Associated Press reports Arizona’s 1961 highway death toll reached 312 after three more fatalities. Mildred Burnett 48 and her daughter Nan 20 of Los Angeles died when their car was rear ended near Gila Bend by Keith Edwards 49 of Camp Pendleton California. Edwards escaped with minor injuries. Also killed was Duncan Devoe Brown 1 Fr of Mesa struck by a car south of Phoenix during a windy thunderstorm. Driver Carl Jacobson 21 of Scottsdale said he failed to see Brown due to heavy rain.

Congo Premier Adoula vows to block Katanga secession
Premier Adoula said he reached an agreement with Antoine Gizenga to continue Patrice Lumumba’s unity policy. Gizenga will arrive to assume a post in the new regime. Adoula warned he will use all means including force if necessary to prevent secession. He opened the door to Communist diplomats if they respect Congo sovereignty and stay out of politics, and reaffirmed a nonalignment stance.

A California family exposed to carbon monoxide in Flagstaff was treated and released from Community Hospital. Mr and Mrs J Bankson and their son were rushed by police after Bankson and the boy became unconscious at Walkers Chevron. Mrs Bankson drove them to the station where attendants helped return them to the car before emergency room admission. All suffered headache and stomach pains.
