At Vanderberg Air Force Base Air Force planes attempt a midair grab of the Discoverer XIV space capsule. The latest satellite is reported to orbit every 12 minutes as crews seek a successful recovery following earlier difficulties with prior capsules.
A weather tablet notes high temperatures around 86 and lows near 2 with no precipitation. It compares year ago readings and lists historic highs for the date, including 87 and 149. In Geneseo New York Ralph Bixby aged 50 died after a tractor fire he was inflating apparently exploded sending flames and debris at him. Sheriff deputies report the fatal accident occurred when the device exploded during inflation.
New York AP reporting that Arizona delegates dismiss California water plans as publicity. Mark Witmer of Phoenix ridiculed California's assertion. The case, tied to Judge Simon Rifkind's master plan for river division, seeks 3,800,000 acre feet annually from the Colorado River.
