The New York stock market steadied in a technical rally at noon led by gains in the Dow Jones average up 5.06 to 870.67 after recent 19 month lows. The NYSE composite rose to 53.75, the American Exchange index gained 0.84 to 119.43, with 9.49 million shares traded as many issues saw lower spirits prices attracting buyers.
AP reports three more jurors joined the Don Bolles murder trial panel, bringing the seated total to 43. Jurors include Max Dunlap of Phoenix and James Robison of Chandler, with ongoing questioning to qualify up to 120 potential jurors amidst defense challenges over memory, news exposure, and alleged procedural issues. Separately in Ottawa, Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau and estranged wife Margaret reportedly consider reconciliation as Mrs. Trudeau seeks to cancel the separation agreement, aided by a friend’s account.
The Northern Arizona Council of Governments plans to adopt the first phase of a 1978 manpower goals outline at a Aug. 22 session. Ten goals cover upgrading use of CETA funds and DES sponsorship. If approved NACOG would sponsor CETA directly with the U.S. Dept. of Labor. The meeting begins at 9 a.m. at the Holiday Inn.
Bedford, assistant director of the State Agriculture and Vegetable Commission, warned that without an effective pesticide the beetle infestation remains uncontrolled. He urged action and awaited better solutions from authorities.
