The National Weather Service reports a record low of 26 degrees this morning, breaking the previous 47 degree August 14 mark set in 1249. Forecasters expect sunny days with clear cool nights today and Tuesday, and lows near 44 tonight with end of week readings in the upper 30s.
Coconino County Recorder Helen J. Hudgens announced Blanche Berreman’s appointment as chief deputy. Berreman, a five year Flagstaff resident and NAU University faculty wife, succeeds Patricia Fabrite who moves to a state role. Berreman holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from NAU and has ties to local churches and the Congregational Church.
President Ford inspected the Parado oil shale mine near Rifle Colorado during a two day six city tour. He rode to the site in a helicopter and walked deep into the mine as part of a push to boost domestic energy from shale. The Parado project hosts 17 oil companies and produces about 200 barrels of oil daily from 500 tons of shale. Ford later reviewed two waste use pilot projects aimed at road construction and soil growth to address disposal concerns.
Secretary of State Kissinger says renewed shuttle diplomacy has a good chance to secure an interim Israel Egypt accord. He asserts negotiations have progressed and all parties see value in returning to the Middle East to bring talks to a successful conclusion.
The Sun reports a major theft of Indian jewelry from Dodson Leather Works in Tuba City late Sunday. Sheriff’s investigators value the loss around $200,000, marking a third such heist in Coconino County in two months with two earlier cases unsolved.
Yavapai County Sheriff Robert Scott challenged the State Livestock Sanitary Board on who should control stray burros. Board inspector Gerald Van Landingham cited a five year old dispute as a public nuisance, but Scott said the sheriff will pursue complaints due to board noncooperation. The affair traces to Aug. 9 when Rep. Sam Steiger killed two burros near Paulden after entering a pen to check brands in a herd rounded up along US 89.
The Board of Supervisors formalized county wide tax rates, with Pinewood Improvement District at the highest combined rate of about 15.50 per 100, to cover a $23,812 debt. Flagstaff's rate is fifth highest at about 0.6710, including county state, city, and school levies. Other districts like Tuba City, Fredonia-Mocassin, and Grand Canyon School District show variances, while individual district charges such as Hualapai Reservation and Sedona Fire District also changed.
The Southern Union Gas Co. seeks Arizona ACC approval to raise 700000 by a monthly surcharge to customers for exploratory drilling in the Holbrook Basin. Webb Resources would drill. Southern Union would own produced gas and aim to recoup the advance with no refunds if not recovered.
