The 14th annual Winslow Art Expo opens Friday at noon with hundreds of paintings photographs sculptures and other works from artists in Montana California Colorado New Mexico Kentucky Utah and Arizona. Laton Laton and W C Rubotten of Prescott exhibit. An evening shows under Caral Smith begins at 7 p.m. daily through August 24 with traveling minstrel style performances.
SECOND MESA The 1975 Snake and Antelope Ceremony on the Hopi Indian Reservation will be closed to all non-Indians. Snake Society leaders said despite warnings, many non-Indians have recorded the religious songs and photographed the ceremony. The rites include prayers for rain crops and a long life for mankind and all living things.
Police investigate a burglary at Little Santa Fe Avenue where rings and necklaces valued at 2156 dollars were taken after thieves entered through a rear door. Store owner David Gracia reported the loss and police identified items missing while two suspects face related charges in the motor vehicle case.
James V. Barron of Sedona died Monday at home at age 52. A memorial service is set for 11 a.m. Saturday at Unity Church. Barron helped establish Sedona Health Care Facility and served on the Northern Arizona Health Council board. He also belonged to the Red Rocks Taxpayers Association. Survivors include his widow Idala sons Rhett and Roark three brothers and his mother Effie Vereen. Sedona Home for Funerals handled arrangements.
Weltha Beard Butterfield 66 died Wednesday in Bakersfield after a life spent in teaching. Born 1909 in Mantena Illinois she moved to Flagstaff in 1914 and graduated from Arizona State Teachers College. She taught in Winslow and California schools from the early 1920s until retirement. survived by Reuben Butterfield Georgia Berger three Bakersfield grandchildren and James D Beard Flagstaff brother. Services pending.
Claro B. Candelaria, 67, Holbrook, a city maintenance worker, died Wednesday at Holbrook Hospital. Rosary at 7 p.m. today and Mass at 10 a.m. Friday at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church. He is survived by his widow, Irene.
