A Savannah Georgia youth told in a soft southern voice the six day Grand Canyon survival ordeal. John Manson Owens 16 was found on a Colorado River sandbar after companions Rev Eugene A Gavigan 30 and Walter J Mahany Jr 16 perished. He described thirst hunger and the rescue by an Army helicopter to a rim hospital where he recounted the events and the Padre guiding their risky descent.

Two Inmate Escape From Rhode Island State Prison
Gennaro D Amico aged 38 serving 20 years for attempted murder of a policeman and Edward J Andrews aged 28 serving time for rape and killing a a schoolteacher escaped Rhode Island State Prison by scaling a wall and forcing a guard to drive them to Providence before fleeing in a swatting car.

Arizona State College Regents approved bids and contracts totaling 124,620 dollars at their meeting. Aly Schorman Construction Co. of Flagstaff received 48,700 for the president's home, while William B Porter Construction Co. of Mesa won a 52,120 site improvement and landscaping contract. Bids for a 60 by 40 foot addition to the College Union were rejected as too high. An amended 847,000 loan with the Community Facilities Administration was approved. Joint Babbitt to sign a contract services agreement for the college dining hall for 1959-60. Meal ticket prices were adjusted. Two college appointments noted.

Couple Admit Tourist Murder Here
A middle aged Los Angeles couple were arrested this morning and confessed to the brutal killing of a 53 year old tourist whose body was found eight miles east of Flagstaff off Us 89 Friday. Sheriff Cecil Richardson named the suspects as William McGee 52 and Minnie Neal 50 both of Los Angeles. The murdered man Ary Besl 60 also of Los Angeles was slain in a lonely spot after a visit to friends in Follett Texas. The couple allegedly took cash about $500 after the murder and fled with the car to Los Angeles aboard the Santa Fe El Capitan. A swift investigation followed including a patrol car sighting and a description broadcast before agents arrested the couple on their arrival in Los Angeles. The body of Besl was found with five stab wounds Friday afternoon. Page two continued.

Flagsted Declares Man Found Shot to Death at Home
Butler Magruder a 47 year old Plagstall man was found dead in his home near Barker Village off Highway 66 by his wife and another witness. Cecil Richardson reported the death appears self inflicted with a Smith and Wesson revolver. Dr. Jay Sister reported the death under examination by Sister Lanaus.

Grand Canyon deaths ruled accidental in canyon trek
In a Grand Canyon inquest the jury found that Father Eugene A. Gavigan and 15 year old Walter Mahany died accidentally from falls and exposure during a perilous weekend trek. John Manson Owens II survived six days, reuniting with his father John Manson Owens Jr in a hospital room near the canyon. Owens III was examined in his room as the verdict was delivered. County Plans Racing Track At Ft Tuthill
Coconino County plans a three-quarter mile oval track at Fort Tuthill Fairgrounds south of the city. Frank L. Christensen, chairman, said completion by next summer is likely and a grandstand for about 5,000 spectators will be added later. Tentative plans include three baseball diamonds inside the track and a temporary survey has been approved. Bids Sought August 14 on Area Road Project
Bids on a county road project will be opened by the Arizona Highway Commission on August 4. The project covers about four miles north of the Coconino area and extends west over a new alignment of State Route 78 for 105 miles to Wingstar.
