New York stock market steadied in light trading as the Dow Jones industrial average rose 2.17 to 717.20 at noon and the broader market showed only fractional changes. The Associated Press index hovered near the prior level while many key issues moved softly.
Phoenix AP reports four jurors are to hear a libel suit in Maricopa County Superior Court. Former attorney general Wade Churels seeks 250000 exemplary and punitive damages plus 20000 compensatory from Phoenix Newspapers Inc Eugene C Pulliam publisher and Michael Padev editor for an allegedly false May 1 1959 editorial based on a speech. The original 2075000 claim was reduced after part of the complaint was dismissed. Judge Warren McCarthy told prospective jurors the editorial was libelous on its face.

A 2 year-old Higstaff man is held in city jail today on counts of auto theft and bad check after a string of crimes. John Wranklin Bass, 23, was arrested shortly after 4 am. He allegedly stole a pickup from a local garage, wrecked it, stole a student's car, and attempted to buy gas with a bad check in Williams. He was turned over to Flagstaff officers. The case likely will be heard today by City Magistrate James Brintley. A burglar alarm led to the arrest of We pair-Furt Weyar Stalls, 29, and Jo Ann Yardell, 25, found near a parked car. The pair is held on night-time burglary charges and are wanted in Oklahoma on similar charges.
Jim B. Wright 78 former Flagstaff police chief died at his home in Freeno California after a lingering illness. Funeral services set for Wednesday in Fresno. Survivors include wife Myrtle and three sons Billy Harold and Timmy plus two daughters Marjorie Kovack and Barbara Meyers.
Charles Herring, a Tapeke Kanwei to Phoenix organizer of Southwestern Machinery and Supply Co, died in Denver after a lingering illness. Survived by wife Laura, a son and daughter living in Call for Dig, two sons and a daughter in Denver. Funeral services were set for Shelby with burial in Denver.
P McConkey formerly of G J Bindih Construction who built the Bright Angel Trail in the Grand Canyon died Sunday in a Phoenix hospital. Requiem High Mass set for 9 am Wednesday at St Gregory's Catholic Church Phoenix. Burial in St Francis Cemetery.

Mrs. Laisie Silversmith, 23, of Window Rock, died at San Antonio's Army Medical Center after being burned in a house fire that destroyed her home. One of her four children also perished in the blaze, which left five percent of her body burned.
