Ford May Nix Tax Cut Renewal

Treasury Secretary William E. Simon testified before the House Budget Committee that President Ford will decide whether to extend the tax cut for another year. He cited concerns about the federal deficit and noted estimates ranging from 62 to 95 billion if the extension is skipped, while many economists back renewal to aid economic recovery. If lapse occurs January 1, withholding and Social Security deductals rise, reducing spendable income as oil prices climb.
