California’s Board of Corrections agreed to urge immediate hiring of 403 new employees, including 318 guards, for state prisons amid rising violence. They proposed on-site prison inspections with inmates and guards, and a third plan to extend a tax force evaluating safety systems. Federal funds would cover the extra cost, with some budget cuts elsewhere.
