Army doctors at Walter Reed reported that the tumor removed from Senator Everett Dirksen’s right lung was cancerous but had not spread or required further treatment. The final pathologist’s report confirmed the tumor arose in the lung and was malignant, with Dirksen progressing well and not needing assisted breathing for several hours. His son-in-law Senator Howard Baker Jr. said Dirksen is alert but unable to talk due to a breathing tube.
Auto insurance rates could rise 10.1 percent in Hayward and 0 percent elsewhere in Southern Alameda County if Insurance Rating Board firms follow the board's recommendation. The board proposes increases from 6 to 19 percent depending on location, effective upon renewal for some, and not directly affecting direct writers like State Farm Allstate or Farmers. The board notes rising hospital care and repair costs, while major firms indicate plans to follow or study the recommendations. United Press reports Camden New Jersey's 45 man police department was placed on alert after racial violence left a white policeman and a teenage black girl dead from gunfire. Curfews extended in Hartford Connecticut and Fort Lauderdale Florida as violence wracked those cities. Police in Dayton Ohio worked 12 hour shifts amid rock throwing and firebombs by attacking youths.
Newark officials announce registration for Newark Christian School beginning tomorrow and continuing Monday. Classes start Sept 10 for kindergarten through sixth grade at 37371 Filbert St. Bus service and day care available. Call Rev. Larry Swift at 797-2805 for details.
