Legislature shifts to smaller property tax relief package
The California legislature pivots from a proposed 1.1 billion property tax relief plan to a scaled back mini package. Assemblyman Joe Gonsalves of La Mirada says a leaner bill, potentially raising bank and corporation taxes from 7 to 7.5 percent with more capital gains exemptions, could win Republican support. Assemblyman William Bagley of San Rafael plans a companion half billion dollar measure aligned with Governor Reagan, aimed at closing a 33 million revenue gap while avoiding broad social policy impact. Death sentence for Tex Watson in Tate-LaBianca case
Los Angeles reports Charles Tex Watson was given the death penalty by a unanimous jury for the Tate LaBianca murders. Watson, 25, was condemned after pleading not guilty by reason of insanity. Manson and three female followers had earlier been sentenced to death at the first trial. Deputy District Attorney Vincent Bugliosi argued no mitigating circumstances warranted the death penalty. The defense noted the court’s discomfort with a death verdict in such a case. Memorial notices follow.
