Nixon to convert germ warfare labs into cancer research center
President Nixon announced Ft Detrick would convert part of its germ warfare laboratories into a government sponsored cancer research facility aimed at saving lives. Buildings and equipment valued over 70 million dollars would be turned to a private contractor for the program, with about 500 workers, including some current employees, moving to cancer research duties. He urged Congress to back the Quest for Cancer bill creating an independent agency to oversee federal cancer research, noting the facility would be open to scientists worldwide.
