Miscarriages Linked to Coffee, Utah Study Finds
Salt Lake City reports a University of Utah study linking high coffee intake to miscarriages and fetal distress. Weathersbee, a dairy science doctoral candidate, with Drs. Lodge and Otterman, surveyed 580 pregnancies in 1974 and found 13 of 14 women drinking seven cups daily had unfavorable outcomes. The retrospective study notes possible confounding factors and calls for caution in drawing firm conclusions.

OSHA proposed tighter exposure limits for TCE and beryllium
The United States Occupational Safety and Health Administration proposes stricter limits on trichloroethylene and beryllium exposure affecting about 21 000 workers with new monitoring and medical surveillance. TCE exposure would cap eight hour levels at 100 ppm with reduced ceiling and elimination of the 300 ppm peak. beryllium would drop to one microgram per cubic meter over eight hours and five micrograms over 15 minutes, plus enhanced monitoring. The action seeks public comment on environmental and inflationary impacts and whether to test these substances as carcinogens.
