A domestic Indian Airlines passenger plane crashed 16 minutes after takeoff from Bombay. All 95 aboard died including 69 passengers and six crew. Fire broke out in the rear. the craft circled back to the airport and crashed near the field. It was unclear if any Americans were aboard.
London papers say Chiang Ching wife of Mao Tse Tung and three Shanghai clique radicals were arrested and placed under house arrest after an alleged coup against China’s new leaders. The reports cite Peking briefings and posters claiming Hua Kuo-feng as party chair and military chief.
A Coast Guard plane from San Francisco aided by search dogs hunted for 16 year old Matthew Smith in Lassen Volcanic National Park. The youth was last seen Sunday and the operation used dogs owned by Wilderness Funders Inc as crews flew via Truckee to Plumas County.
Detroit news reports the Ford Motor Co bargaining faces a risky ratification as skilled tradesmen mostly reject the tentative three year contract while production workers vote in favor. With 25,000 skilled workers on strike and tight local disputes, outcome remains uncertain pending final tallies.
Rep Don Edwards of San Jose faces accusations of a blatant conflict of interest for aiding a business acquaintance. Documents released by opponent Herb Smith allege Edwards lobbied HUD to forgive 19 700 in mortgage payments on a San Jose low income housing project where Ben Ginden held a principal stake. Edwards and Ginden deny wrongdoing, while the land title was moved through Valley Title Co to secure a 2 million HUD insured loan before foreclosure risks escalated.
