Professor fired for letting students grade themselves
San Francisco State College dismissed Assoc Prof Willard Carpenter 39 of international relations for permitting self grading last spring. President Hayakawa informed him that his contract would end after the next academic year as repercussions from inflated grades raised concern overenrollment.

Girl leapt from car after argument injures teen
A 15 year old girl Sally Bartoni of 5582 Hughes Place was hurt when she jumped from a moving 1956 Chevrolet after a dispute with her boyfriend Albar Arson 18 of Hayward. She was in satisfactory condition at Washington Hospital under observation for head injuries. The car was driven by Gary Smith 19 of Hayward with Miss Bartoni in front seat and Arson also aboard. Police say the car was traveling about 25 mph near Farwell Drive and Lemke Place.

Not guilty pleas in $9,000 Hayward drug store robbery
Two Alameda men Kenneth E. Patterson 30 and Alfred C. Sparks 38 pleaded not guilty in Hayward Municipal Court to the $9,000 robbery of the Pay Less Drug Store at 26954 Mission Blvd Hayward on Oct 29. A preliminary hearing is set for Dec 4 at 2 p.m. before Judge T L Foley. Police arrested them after witnesses identified their photographs.

Commerce index falls signaling no major downturn
The Commerce Department reported a 0.8 percent drop in the composite index of eight leading indicators for October, indicating no significant downturn despite inflation. Exports exceeded imports by 156.6 million dollars, the smallest favorable balance since the prior October’s deficit, with the yearly goal of a five hundred billion dollar surplus still unmet.
