Alameda County Board awards 1.65 million in revenue sharing
After hours of vacillation the Alameda County Board of Supervisors awarded 1.65 million in revenue sharing funds for 1976-77 to community based human services programs. The money will finance existing programs for the first three months of 1977 while consideration of new and expanded programs is deferred until January. The panel also directed adding roughly 5 million in one time public works funds to the four year revenue sharing pot to balance property tax relief and community programs through 1981.

Legionnaires Disease Probe Criticized by Coroner
Allegheny County coroner Dr. Cyril Wecht told a congressional subcommittee the Pennsylvania Health Department failed to take proper investigative steps after warnings about the Legionnaires disease outbreak last summer. The illness sickened 80 people, with 29 dead or seriously harmed, and hit a major Belevator Hotel convention site, prompting calls for a federal contingency plan. Wecht and others questioned why focus centered on swine flu while toxic exposure might have been possible, and the panel urged broader simultaneous testing for infectious and chemical causes. State Health Secretary Leonard Bachman defended the department, saying it acted responsibly to prevent panic after learning of the outbreak on August 2.
