Supervisors eye new Santa Rita jail plan
Alameda County's Board of Supervisors began plans for permanent jail facilities at Santa Rita. An aerial survey and topographic mapping of the 945 acre Camp Parks area near Pleasanton will fund a consultants study while Sheriff Madigan and County Administrator Strathman explore a joint jail and rehabilitation center with Estate and Bay Area counties. The project anticipates a 15 year inmate census of about 3,000 and possible maximum security capacity for 1,100 inmates awaiting trial. The Santa Rita area was a WWII naval disciplinary barracks part of Camp Parks.
