First American dancer Karen Morell to study ballet pedagogy in Russia
Karen Morell, a 34 year old dancer trained with the New York City Ballet, becomes the first American admitted to a Russian ballet pedagogy course under a Fulbright program. Her parents, Dr. Willard B. Morell and Mrs. Morell of Fremont, credit their joint sacrifice and parental involvement for her rise from San Francisco Nutcracker auditions to international stages, including Amsterdam and Lincoln Center. Despite a severe elbow injury, she returned to perform and pursued further study in Leningrad, with a spring visit planned by her mother.
