First American deserter returns home from Vietnam

Veto Baker, 27, of Honolulu, described as the first U.S. deserter surfaced since the end of the Vietnam War, arrived in Bangkok with his three children and his common law wife Mai, saying the Army would not allow them to wed. Officials indicated a court martial was unlikely due to his long absence, with likely detention and possible arrival at Travis Air Force Base for processing. Baker left his unit in Da Nang in 1972 to live underground, citing disputes over marrying Mai, a Vietnamese citizen, and stated he faced punishment but believed his family would be safe.
