Birds cause fiery takeoff crash near Kennedy Airport
A three engine Overseas National Airways jet bound for Jidda burst into flames on takeoff after ingesting birds into the right engine. The pilot aborted the roll and evacuated 129 passengers and 10 crew safely as the plane stopped in mud on Runway 31 L. About 50 responders were treated for minor injuries. The incident follows a 1960s crash at the same airport and highlights bird strike risks near runways.

Scientist says life on other planets likely exists widely
Dr. John Billingham of Ames Research Laboratory told reporters that evidence and theory support life beyond Earth. He cited common organic molecules, many stars with planets, and billions of other planets making intelligent life plausible though dubious.
