Nation backs hospital bed cuts to curb costs

A National Academy of Sciences panel urged a ten percent cut in hospital beds over five years, reducing beds per 1000 people from 4.4 to around 3.9. They warn of longer elective surgery wait lists but say managed waits are acceptable to lower overall medical costs and avoid overcapacity. The report also highlights third party payers influence on costs and calls for national health planning under revised health act.

Fremont officials canceled more than 2.5 million dollars in voter approved bonds for the Alviso Centerville Irvington and Warm Springs districts.
