California Faces Death Risk as Nuclear Plants Grow
A UPI report to a Sacramento legislative hearing warned that as California adds reactors the chance of radiation exposure and fatal accidents rises. The staff estimated four to fifteen transportation accidents could occur between 1985 and 1995 as 21 reactors come online. Shipments of radioactive material will surge from 10 tons annually to 1 225 tons by 1984, triggering debates on evacuation plans and liability limits after a major reactor incident.
