A semi conscious condition led to a two vehicle crash on a divided highway. A northbound car collided with a southbound vehicle that crossed the divider. Both cars slammed into the northbound lane before spinning apart. The southbound driver died, per CHP.
President Nixon created a Cabinet level Committee on Environmental Quality to curb air pollution and solid waste. The eighth member joins leaders like Dr. Lee A. DuBridge in shaping programs to prevent environmental damage and explore cleaner engine technology. The council meets at Nixon's Florida retreat.
A family places a wreath on the grave of Campos in San Bruno each Memorial Day, Veterans Day, and anniversaries of his birth and death in Vietnam. The Huey couple, who adopted Campos into their family, sponsor a flag along the Avenue of Flags in Trondale and contribute to a little jar of “Richard's flower money” to honor his memory.

Gershel, 26, charges police protect supervisors from drinking problems and rough treatment of prisoners. Capt. Harry C. Heyen says a Fremont Elks Club incident involved two belligerent men who were escorted home after a fight. he calls Gershel’s claims distortions and notes only two discipline cases occurred. Heyen maintains no widespread drinking by duty officers.
The county board authorized raises across several departments including a 5 percent base raise for lawyers and a 7 and one half percent for firemen in three departments. County officials such as Richard Moore Gene Waring and Sheriff Madigan received individual increases. Vocational nurses, public health staff nurses aides and social workers saw percentage raises, with totals driving deputy pay to new levels.
Alameda County Sheriff Frank Madigan said several Santa Rita Prison Farm guards, young ex-GIs from Vietnam, treated Berkeley demonstrators like Viet Cong during two weeks of disturbances. He pledged discipline for those involved but kept details for after the grand jury probe.
Robert F. Sharp, 27, a Fremont area motorcycle mechanic living in Oakland, was arraigned in Fremont Municipal Court on a motorcycle theft charge stemming from a January 17 incident. The motorcycle owner, Marshall W. Curtis of Fremont, reported the car theft after noting Sharp's suspected involvement during a prospective sale. Police traced the case through Oakland, Hayward and San Leandro. Judge Roy G. Pucci set bail at 1000 dollars and scheduled a June to enter a plea.

The case named Michael J. Smith Tom Kelso John R. Hughes and Robert Pasehall as co defendants and ordered each to pay 300. Donald Redenbaugh of 37046 Poplar St Newark was also ordered to pay 300 with no recovery on his cross complaint. The suit sought 5000 3000 against juveniles and 2000 exemplary damages from Redenbaugh. Incidents included rock and egg throwing window breaking and a cross burning in the Glaude yard nightly from December 1966 to March 1967. Harry Sheppard, attorney for the Glaudes, said the Redenbaugh complaint alleged vulgar language and insulting remarks.
Newark City Manager Richard Turnlund says the Newark Federation of Fire Fighters Local 1489 is the first group to apply for formal recognition under the new employer employee relations ordinance. He must determine if firefighters form an appropriate unit and notify other groups, while negotiations are hoped to begin next week.
The $805,970 recreation budget totals include $341,187 for park maintenance, $363,421 for the recreation program at central park, and $41,000 for library rentals. Other line items cover Niles Park acquisitions, Rancho Arroyo Neighborhood Park, Warm Springs Manor, and South Park development, with $3,000 for Fremont Sports Federation removed and a $24,000 federation grant remaining in the 1968-70 plan.
In Fremont, Mildred Jackson, 26, secretary to Newark Police chief William Morrison, remained in serious condition at Washington Hospital after a crash that killed off duty Sgt Jack E Johnson. The other driver, John C Corbett, 36, faced manslaughter charges. 400 Newark High School students petitioned to lower city flags in Johnson's honor.
Newark officials expect completion of a school district building addition soon after a $299,000 concrete slab was laid with minor moisture. Trustees moved to accept the addition after contractor T. Lewis agreed to take responsibility for laying floor tile, despite earlier refusals and delays. The project had been scheduled for completion in December.
A U.S. Senate subcommittee subpoenas Stanford University to supply all records on 12 organizations and 90 individuals by June 3 as part of a federal inquiry into campus disorders. The university refused to disclose names, citing standard personnel practice. President Kenneth Pitzer directed counsel to assess the subpoena’s scope and legality while Dean Joel Smith received the document.
