Arms pact breakthrough announced in Geneva talks
United States and Soviet officials announced a framework for a new strategic arms limitation pact after two days of talks between Cyrus Vance and Andrei Gromyko. The framework builds on the Vladivostok accord of 1974 and aims to curb missiles and bombers while setting stage for round three to address new weapons and nuclear arsenals. The discussions, described as useful and intense, occurred at the Soviet diplomatic mission in Geneva with no public dinner as in prior negotiations.

Immunized man contracts rabies mystifies doctors
In Elhany New York a state microbiologist Jerome Andrulonis who had been immunized against rabies fell ill with the disease. He remains in strong isolation at Albany Medical Center Hospital as doctors investigate how the vaccinated man contracted rabies. Five hospital workers and seven others exposed will begin the 21 shot series. Tests confirm Andrulonis is immune, a paradox unmatched in medical history. The vaccine involved was an experimental oral rabies vaccine for wildlife from CDC in Atlanta.
