Reagan opposes state veto of coast development

California Governor Ronald Reagan said the state should not have an absolute veto over local coastal planning. He warned against a precedent of state takeover and urged a limited role that respects local commissions while seeking coastal protection. He also commented on CRLA hearings and a forthcoming UC Regents decision plus tax reform plans.

Reagan questions CRLA hearing prospects

Governor Ronald Reagan voiced low confidence in the federal commission’s hearing into the California Rural Legal Assistance program. He cited witnesses describing an unwillingness to reach a decisive result and mocked the idea of a street dance after hearings. The commission, appointed by the Nixon administration, examined Reagan’s veto of federal CRLA funds over alleged poor service and regulatory violations.

First woman to head United Presbyterian General Assembly

Lois H. Stair, 47, a Wisconsin ruling elder, was elected the first woman head of the United Presbyterian Church General Assembly, the second woman to lead a major church in the United States. She said women have been victims of heritage but times are changing as leadership roles grow. Ruth Rohlf s became president of the American Baptist Convention last week. Approximately 2,000 church men attended the meeting amid reports on youth, drugs, and church discipline. Gifts rose to 357.45 million last year while total membership declined by 77,000 to 3,095,791. Stair noted few women in leadership due to hesitation and availability, not necessarily opposition by men.
