A family of five escaped unharmed from a Fremont condominium at 21 Caribbean Common after a cigarette ignited a living room couch around midnight. Dennis J. Murphy and his wife used water and baking soda to fight it, then fled via a second story ladder as their teenage son John jumped to safety. two daughters escaped by unknown means. The blaze caused about $1,500 in building damage and minimal damage to its contents.
