Police logs indicate 3481 offenses in Newark from February through March including burglaries 22 percent of total thefts and forgery. The report notes reductions in several crime categories though precise figures are unclear due to OCR errors.
A senior citizens nutrition corps will be set up in Fremont funded by a 60000 emergency food and medical grant. Congressman Don Edwards announced the program tied to the Southern Alameda County Economic Operating Agency led by Iberto Acosta. It will deliver hot meals to those unable to serve themselves and run a mobile grocery to reach homebound individuals, plus an information service on food stamps Medicare and related aid. The corps will hire full time staff and part time volunteers.
In Oakland an orderly at Kaiser Foundation Hospital was detained after a fatal shooting in the hospital's emergency ward. Richard Wilparently, 36, shot his common law wife Mary Williams, a day hospital worker, as she moved through the corridor before midnight. The motive cited was anger. Williams reportedly fired a .25 caliber pistol from beneath his hat, striking Williams multiple times. A security guard and other staff attempted to intervene as Williams allegedly declared, I just killed my wife, before surrendering. Jerry Proctor, Mary Williams, and Connie Leonard were named in the chaotic scene.
Secretary of State candidate M Jordan, 80, has suffered a stroke at home and is in serious condition with partial paralysis and impaired speech. Doctors report fatigue and stress as contributing factors. Jordan was first elected in 1942 and has a long career in state government.
Fremont officers from Oakland Police Department and San Bruno Police Depart were hired by Fremontland Harold D Buckholz effective May 15. The pair, including Robert A Sebastiani, reduce the power deficit from 11 to 9.
