Eisenhower’s body lies in state at the Capitol Rotunda after a snow‑darkened Palm Sunday procession from the National Cathedral. Thousands file by casket as dignitaries led by Nixon, Johnson and foreign representatives attend a state ceremony. President Nixon delivered a 16 minute Rotunda eulogy for Dwight D. Eisenhower praising his character as the heart of America. He recalled Eisenhower's love for family and country, calling him a good and gentle man loved by the world and saying freedom and democracy were living truths.
Rockets struck Saigon Sunday night marking a revival of shelling after a two week lull. No casualties were reported by Allied spokesmen. U S commanders said North Vietnamese troops fired at a U S spotter plane near the DMZ but were silenced by counter barrages.
Police shot their way into a New Bethel Baptist Church meeting on Detroit's near West Side killing one officer and wounding another. About 135 people were arrested after gunfire from kneeling riflemen. Four inside the church were wounded as police seized seven rifles three handguns and a large ammo cache. The Rev C L Franklin father of Aretha Franklin led the church.
Dr Allan J Stanley of the University of Oklahoma Medical School proposes releasing defective sterile male rats to outcompete fertile males in city slums and elsewhere. He says these sterilized males will cause false pregnancies, halting rat reproduction for about 63 days and could drastically reduce the U S rat population amid billions in annual damage and health risks. A field trial was planned, with continuation hinted on page 2.
New Haven Unified School District trustees will hold a special 6 p.m. meeting at district offices 33480 Western Ave Union City for a closed personnel session and the appointment of staff. The session was rescheduled from 3 p.m. Saturday and focuses on selecting a replacement for Dr Harold Schoenfeld, former superintendent.
