Wilcox defeats Washington 4 to 2 in the Lions Club Invitational quarterfinal at James Lick High School. Early three‑run first inning and disputed umpire calls shape the game, Washington adds two runs late but falls short.
Washington High School defeated Bellarmine 3 to 24 in a quarterfinal of the 18th annual Lions Club Invitational at James Lick High. Washington built leads with timely hitting, stealing, and strong pitching as Frank Fadenna and Mike Jacinto drove in runs while Jeff Balordi fumbled relievers for Bellarmine.
Mission San Jose leads a strong Mission Valley Athletic League showing with fourteen players on the all star roll including seven from the unbeaten champs. Les Pennelly headlines the MLJ list with other MLJ standouts Rich Swift Dave Price and more. The Aug 27 game at Oakland Alameda County Coliseum benefits the Cerebral Palsy Foundation of Contra Costa.
In Riverside, Stanford led by pitcher Phil Keller who no-hit defending NCAA champion Arizona State as Stanford defeated ASU 0 on opening day. Air Force edged USC 10-8, while Arizona State beat Oregon State 10-3. St Johns defeated Fordham, and Stanford improved to 16 starts with Keller in control.
Irvington High drops a 3-2 decision to Samuel Ayer in 11 innings as missed chances and costly base running haunt the Vikes. Mike Page opens the 11th with a walk, setting up an infield hit by Mark Fimberley that scores Page for the winning run. Kent Kelley, Mike Bailey reach on errors and walks in the bottom of the 11th to force extra frames before Ayer seals it.
Leigh High defeated Newark 6-3 at the San Jose Municipal Diamond to drop the Knights from the tourney and push Leigh toward the playoffs on Wednesday. Jack Lamothe and Bob Inchen each drove in runs in the first inning as Leigh scored three. Newark opened with a 1-0 lead on Steve Popst’s triple, but Leigh answered with multiple runs in the first, fourth, and sixth. Newark threatened in the seventh but were thwarted by Leigh pitcher Rick Carrillo’s defensive plays and a critical double play sequence. Chuck Pierce relieved for Newark and closed out the game, while Leigh prevented a late rally. The game followed a later Mission Valley Athletic League schedule.
In a tense inning, Ballard grounded to Martinez for the third out as Ballard advanced on an error and wild pitch. Roelling might have scored if he stayed put. Irvington left runners on base in the first, second, and eleventh, and they begin the Mission Valley Athletic Conference season against host John F. Kennedy at 3:90 PM.
Los Gatos defeated San Jose John F. Kennedy High 6-0 in the Santa Clara County Lions Club Baseball Tournament. Dan Dolen struck out 13 for Los Gatos as six Kennedy runs came in unearned over the final innings. Kennedy starter Jim Hummell faltered in the sixth, and Irvington next hosts Kennedy at 3:30 pm.
Don January clinched the Jacksonville Open title with a remarkable three under par 58. Dale Douglass also featured as the field moved through a tense final round.
