Anti-Brandt group wins German house majority
In Mainz West Germany the Christian Democrats won a one vote majority in the upper house of the Federal Parliament as Rhineland Palatinate votes left Brandt's Social Democrats with strength in the lower house. The National Democrats failed to gain seats. CDU led by Seheil won 50 percent of votes and 3 seats, SPD 40.5 percent and 44 seats, FDP 5.4 percent and 4 seats. The result preserves Brandt's coalition in the lower house while giving the opposition limited leverage in the upper chamber. Sheikh Zayed will visit Egypt in May to discuss Gulf state security aid following British withdrawal, per Al Ahram.
