States use of vast federal tax machine approved
Washington (UPI) The House Ways and Means Committee tentatively approved a plan to let states use the federal government vast tax system to collect their income taxes. The piggyback tax plan passed 11 to 3, with conditions that five states accept it and that state taxes equal at least 10 percent of all state income taxes. Proponents say it would raise state revenue by sharing federal forms, and taxes would be collected with federal returns. The Mills revenue sharing bill would provide 5.3 billion dollars yearly to state and local governments for five years, with restrictions on spending. The panel also favored a separate formula for distributing 3.5 billion to states and localities, based on rural population, urbanized areas, and per capita income, defining urbanized areas as states with 50,000 or more population.
