House unit votes to hike SST funds to nearly $1 billion
The House Appropriations Committee voted to raise SST funding to about $1 billion for development of the supersonic transport jet. The panel approved $134 million more for SST spending from March 30 to June 3, while defeating a bid to strike all SST money from a Transportation Department bill. Senatorial and executive resistance persisted as critics argued the project remains risky and unlikely to attract private funding.
