Second fish kill puzzles officials
Fish and game officials said tests for pesticides would be run on two fish samples at the department in Sacramento. Diversion of water into the pit from the creek began about a week after the district started operation of a flexible rubber fabric dam stretching across the flood control channel. Water is backed up behind the dam and siphoned into Shinn Pit through three 36 inch pipes, ACWD Assistant Chief Engineer Stanley H. Saylor said. Despite efforts of about a half dozen public agencies, the cause of a fish kill along a five mile creek stretch remains undetermined. The kill is thought to have occurred one to two weeks earlier, complicating clues. The water district is upgrading creek monitoring and processing procedures, though most were not in place before the second incident.
