The Union City dog Komet endured severe injuries while housed in a municipal pound. Officials blamed faulty truck doors and lax supervision. vets doubted self harm or dog fights. County investigators review animal control practices and staffing.
A proposed Newark ordinance would bar city employees from striking. The city council also weighs an agreement with Transamerica Development Corp to fund boating facility upgrades at Lakeshore Park and a sailing program run by Beery the UC Berkeley instructor. Beery plans a two year sailing school at the facility with El Toro class sails, plus SAUSALITO and Annapolis naval training ties. The visit would entail a three week trip to the United States for development talks.
UPI reports from Saigon indicate a wide offensive with 336 U.S. combat deaths and 565 serious injuries in a two week period, plus 39 South Vietnamese military and civilian wounded. Overnight shelling saw more than double the previous figure as casualties declined versus the prior week.
San Lorenzo and Castro Valley voters rejected proposed school tax hikes mirroring Hayward’s stance. The measures would have raised taxes by $1.50 per $100 assessed valuation, with Castro Valley and San Lorenzo following Hayward’s February 11 rejection in spirit and outcome.
Daniel Gallatin Timeral, 95, died yesterday in a San Francisco hospital. Services will be at 10 am tomorrow in the Fremont Chapel of the Roses Mortuary Fremont. He was a native of Oakland and long time Alameda County resident. He belonged to the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers for 64 years and is survived by a niece, Alice Finch of Oakland. Burial is in Evergreen Cemetery in Oakland.
