Ford aide says GOP must widen base in coming years
White House chief of staff Donald Rumsfeld told NBCs Meet the Press that the Republican Party should broaden its appeal while President Ford weighs policy moves. He noted conservatives led by Ronald Reagan oppose the proposed 53 billion dollar deficit and other steps viewed as violations of party principles. Rumsfeld said Ford remains committed to Republican fundamentals and to governing with a majority in Congress, while Reagan and other conservatives push back on spending and recession remedies. He also said Ford may keep Nelson Rockefeller as running mate and plans to involve him in policy meetings.
