Alameda County Water District directors reviewed the environmental impact of quarry pit pumping and salt water intrusion into Alameda Creek as they renew the well pumping assessment. General Manager Matt Whitfield cited a three foot lower groundwater level and 1000 acre feet of salt water entering the basin since 1969. Assistant Chief Engineer Stanley Saylor said quarry pumping would have prevented intrusion if not for the district’s replenishment program. The district projects 20600 acre feet of additional water purchases next year with a conservation program costing 1,357,000 dollars, including 275,000 for a Fabrida inflatable dam device touted as superior to earth dams. The board scheduled a public hearing for April 13 at 7:30 p.m. to consider selling the wet pump assessment. the rate need not be set before May.
