Trial set for mining promoters in Nevada fraud case
Merle J. Zweifel a self-styled mining promoter faces 36 felony charges in district court here on alleged false mining claims. Zweifel sought to file over 24 000 claims covering about one million acres in Nevada in June 1971 but was halted by State Attorney General Robert List. List says a random check of 16 claims showed they had not been posted and no trenching or sampling had been done as required. Zweifel argues federal law to protect environment and asserts complaints target Howard Hughes. Judge Lewellyn Young disqualified himself due to potential ownership overlap. Judge John Barret of Reno assigned the case.

Welfare reform claims challenged by official study findings
An official dismissed a welfare study as not secret and not new while noting reforms under the Welfare Reform Act. Reagan had claimed dramatic cuts, but critics say the decline in welfare rolls included job gains, end of double counting, and county program effects, with limited direct savings from the state reforms. The study reportedly shows modest cost reduction and mixed results across programs.
