In New Orleans the Criminal District Court jury acquitted Clay Shaw after a 56 minute deliberation on the 1963 conspiracy to assassinate President John F Kennedy. The ruling ends the high profile case that had drawn international attention and scrutiny from prosecutors and defense.

The Syrian Army led by Defense Minister Hafez al Assad overthrows President Nour eddin al Atagai in a bloodless military coup reported from Damascus. Former President Dwight D. Eisenhower, 74, developed pneumonia in his right lung after high risk abdominal surgery at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. Doctors say he is being treated vigorously with antibiotics while his condition is monitored closely and he remains resting, cooperative, and determined to recover.
In Los Angeles the Sirhan Sirhan court scene erupted as the 24 year old assailant asked to plead guilty to the Kennedy assassination and seek execution. He also moved to dismiss his defense team claiming he could represent himself, a bid rejected by Judge Herbert V. Walker who ruled he remains unable to act alone.
Fremont Chamber of Commerce backs a 10000 professional study for a proposed Fremont Municipal Airport west of the present sky sailing field. The plan calls for two parallel runways to serve general aviation and business jets, with a major focus on cargo aircraft. A private firm with airport location expertise is urged to assess costs and marshy area fill needs, as the project considers use by GMAD plant freight and Hercules transport aircraft.
Fremont deputy district attorney faced jeers as Richard A. Schubert was found not guilty after an eight hour trial in Fremont Municipal Court. The jury acquitted him of shooting a migratory seagull citing lack of corpus delicti as the key defense. Witnesses testified to shots but no body could be located. Schubert claimed he was searching for his wallet when he left his friends.
Fremont police arrested 18 year old Michael T. Horan of Scotia New York after he set up a marijuana purchase with an undercover detective and fled with the officer s money. He was charged with offering marijuana for sale and held on five thousand dollar bail. The incident began when the suspect arranged to buy a half kilo of marijuana through another dealer at a shopping center. After meeting at a home on Camino Santa Barbara the suspect allegedly took the agent s money and disappeared into the residence. Police waited then found no one at the home and later arrested Horan on Chadbourne Street at 10 am yesterday.

LOS ANGELES UP I A new storm drenched Southern California as crews worked to shore up a crumbling levee near the Santa Clara River in Oxnard Ventura County. Emergency plans were prepared to evacuate about one third of Oxnard’s 20 000 residents if the levee failed.
