The California Assembly approved a bill by Assemblyman Frank Murphy to curb campus disruptions. It would jail repeat offenders of indecent language on campus, bar reentry of suspended students, empower administrators to ban troublemakers, limit loudspeakers, and apply breach of peace laws to campuses. A dissenting Democrat argued the measure is ineffective.
Fremont Chamber of Commerce delays a vote to trim its 75 member board to two. The board will discuss the explosive evaluation committee recommendation at a special meeting set for July 9 in city council chambers.
Alameda County Water District directors approve a 2.2 million dollar budget for 1965 70 on a split vote with Harry Brumbaugh opposing. The panel keeps 15 cent tax rate, approves 5 percent raise for Director Matt Whitfield bringing his pay to 26104 and holds 44 thousand in reserve. Assessed district valuation rises 19.6 percent with water sales up 5.6 percent and rates unchanged.
Two new trustees take seats July 2 at an organizational meeting of the Fremont Newark Junior College District board. Walter Thompson and Richard Seeba win Newark and Fremont seats, replacing resigning members. The chairmanship will be chosen at the same session, 60 day vacancy rule governs the unfilled post, and an open invitation will be extended for applications to serve on the board.
Fremont Unified School District trustees back a National Council on Drug Abuse education program aimed at deterring teens from drug use. The effort, led by Mission Peak Kiwanis, includes a community symposium, weekly high school seminars, involvement of former addicts in discussions, and a Teen Challenge counseling hub. The district covers pamphlet mailings. Kiwanis will raise 3000 dollars to fund the program.
Fremont Pipeline Construction Co. won a $65,000 damages award in Alameda County Superior Court after a jury found against Fremont Pipeline in a dispute over a 1964 five mile pipeline project. The water board had rejected Fremont’s bid citing use of Japanese steel, awarding the job to Pestana Inc. for $496,358.
Castro Valley resident D Lowell Jensen was unanimously appointed Alameda County District Attorney to succeed J Frank Coakley who retires July 1 1971. Jensen to serve until then and must stand for election next June. He has led major prosecutions including the Huey Newton case and the Sproul Hall sit‑in inquiry.
