Auto-Tax For Transit Plan Hits Roadblock In Assembly

In Sacramento, a proposed Auto-Tax-For-Transit plan faced a roadblock as Ways and Means Committee members sent the bills by Assemblymen John Foran and Frank Lanterman to a six member subcommittee for additional study. The chair said the measures lack enough support to clear the committee, with a fall report planned. The Foran bill would raise the infia tax on autos from 2 to 25 percent of the vehicle price and boost license fees, forecast to bring in about 48.2 million dollars, while the Lanterman plan would tax gasoline and fuels at 4 percent, targeting 38 million dollars next fiscal year. Foran argued freeway congestion necessitates alternative transport options.
