Alvarado site purchase halted by adjournment
In Union City the Planning Commission adjourned amid heated debate over the Alvarado school site purchase. Chairman Harold Strickland ruled a motion for a vote out of order, delaying action as a letter of approval ahead of a county filing had not been presented. The action stalls a 31 acre purchase amid lawsuits and a lame duck board.

Council reshapes Newark parade routes over SES objections
Newark officials rerouted two SES sponsored parades from Thornton Avenue to Dairy Avenue and Newark Boulevard to Mayhews Landing Road and the church. SES requested a third parade route and a July 25 September 18 exception. The Aug. 8 permit, tied to Tracy’s St Anthony Society, was approved only if $300 to $350 covered city supervision costs. A 1970 traffic count showed a 1 percent rise from 1969, blamed on slow construction and Thornton widening.

Newark CDC board pledges to keep crisis center open
At a subdued Newark Community Drug Council board meeting the pledge was made to keep the crisis center open in the future. The session followed the center’s closure and protests over the firing of former coordinator Dean Selig by Baker and two hired coordinators. An appeals committee seeks a compromise and will review records before a fact finding inquiry. Ted Tinges was named to the committee, replacing Gerald Jorgensen.
