City council criticizes school board over building plan delay
Union City officials blasted the New Haven Unified School District for delaying a master plan while approving a final tract map for 265 homes. The 16 acres set aside for a school may be used for housing unless a plan is pushed soon. The Casa Verde subdivision between the Nimitz Freeway and Fair Ranch Road now totals 570 homes with 200 more planned. Mayor Tom Kitayama and Councilman Henry Franco pressed the district, noting two other subdivisions have repurposed land once earmarked for schools. In other action, the council rezoned land at Alvarado-Niles and Decata to community commercial and multi-family residential to pave the way for a nearby 1 1/2 acre park site owned by the Meyers sisters.

Retired Pacific States Steel Corp. employee and a member of IBEW Local 3387, he is survived by his widow Eleanor, son Ronald of Modesto, brother Albert of San Leandro, and several nieces and nephews. Judy Garland Death Investigated for Possible Overdose
The Evening Card and Scotland Yard said preliminary autopsy findings on Judy Garland’s body in London pointed to a possible drug overdose though the pills could not be identified. A box containing 50 pills was found near her body and further toxicology tests are underway with a coroner’s inquest planned for Wednesday. Garland’s husband Mick Deans will accompany her body to New York for funeral services probably Friday.
