Fremont GM Assembly Plant Reveals Industrial Giant
Inside the 2 million square foot Fremont GM plant visitors view 14 miles of conveyors and a production flow of 44 cars and 27 trucks per hour. 6,300 workers weld paint sand and assemble as a tour train passes hulking skeletons becoming Chevrolets Pontiacs Oldsmobiles Buicks and trucks. The plant uses 324,000 kilowatt hours of electricity eight million cubic feet of natural gas and 1,960,000 gallons of water daily. Payroll exceeds 42.2 million annually with about one fifth spent in Fremont as workers live in the city.
