Racing Bar Stools Crown World Champion Graves
Carol Goodhue reports on Phil Graves of Union City who won the men’s world bar stool racing title in Alameda with an ace bandage on an elbow after a practice fall. Sharon Smith, his daughter, won the women’s division, making them the first father daughter duo to win bar stool race awards. The sport features motorized stools with no brakes, helmets required, and a 750 foot course where stopping is by coast or collision. Graves designs home made variations and prizes safety and humor in a quirky, nonpolluting pastime.
